WIP Wednesday for 28 March 2018

Right. Remember the Vanilla sock I started using Chroma Twist fingering yarn? The one that I started and then frogged and restarted? Well… it’s going to get frogged again. I’m just not happy with how it’s turning out as a vanilla sock. I’m going to frog it, and wind the yarn into two equal balls, and then knit some as-yet-undetermined toe-up pattern that actually has a pattern instead. I like the yarn and the fabric it’s making, just not the way it looks in stockinette.

I did like the way it looked against a backdrop of a Bahamian island, which is where I spent a good deal of time knitting on it.

Knitting in the Bahamas

Since it’s been two weeks since my last WIP Weds post, there has been other knitting progress as well. I’ve gotten a little farther on my Groot GAL square:

And the Chroma Entrelac Scarf has been growing as well:

For the most part, though, the knitting of the month has been fighting with the Chroma Twist socks. Alas.

Have a great rest of the week!

WIP Wednesday for 14 March 2018

Plenty of progress this week, but not a whole lot to show in pictures. First of all, the Thor GAL square is done, which means it was time to start a new square. This one is Groot! (Dancing baby Groot, to be specific.) I think the colors I picked work well for the square, but I’m hoping that they aren’t too similar. I think I’ll be fine. (At least under good lighting.)

Next up is the reworked vanilla sock. You may remember this as the sock that I started as a toe-up two-at-a-time pair last week. Well, I remembered why I haven’t been knitting socks that way: I don’t like the needles I have for that method. So, I got rid of the needles, ripped the sock back, and have restarted the sock as a cuff-down one-at-a-time pair. They also are now not plain vanilla, but are the Vanilla is the New Black pattern. (Which is vanilla except for a fun heel.) Anyway, it took a bit of backwards progress to get there, but I’m happy with where they are.

Have a great rest of the week!

WIP Wednesday for 7 March 2018

Okay, I have decided what I am going to do with the Raw Honey mitts that I made a mistake on (keep knitting the correct one, and hope then frog the first one and hope I have enough yarn to make it the correct length instead) but I’m still annoyed at it so I haven’t been knitting on it this week. I also decided that there’s now no way these will make it in time for the birthday, so they will be a Christmas gift instead.

I have been knitting on the Lacy Chroma Entrelac scarf. I really love this project so, so much. I may have to knit more of them in all the colors of the rainbow so that there’s a whole color palette to choose from.

(This one is my travel knitting, which is why I take pictures of it on my car seats. At least it’s in natural light.)

And I have been knitting on the Thor GAL square. Almost done with it, now that I’ve pulled out the second ball of the background yarn and am using that to finish it. I think I know how I’ll handle getting fewer squares out of each ball of yarn than I’d expected (some of the GAL patterns switch yarns part-way through; I’ll just incorporate more of those) but I’m still loving this project so it didn’t have to sit on time-out for long.

And since last week I finished the Periodic Table GAL square, I’ve cast on the Studio Ghibli square to fill those needles. (As a quick reminder, the Thor square is for the worsted-weight version I’m knitting as a gift. The Studio Ghibli square is for the fingering weight version I’m knitting for myself.) You probably can’t tell, but that white yarn is sparkly. It seemed appropriate for a square about a magical ghost-like spirit creature. (The square features No-Face from Spirited Away, which is Mr. Wyrm’s favorite Studio Ghibli film. (My favorite is Castle in the Sky.))

I haven’t really knit on them much lately, but here’s a current picture of the Minecraft socks anyway:

And I have done something I didn’t plan to do: I started a pair of plain vanilla socks. Um. Oops?

(Yes, okay, doing toe-up two-at-a-time socks isn’t entirely plain vanilla. Close enough.)

WIP Weds for 28 February 2018 ~ the FO edition

Okay, so this week I have been knitting on the Lacy Entrelac Chroma Scarf (because lace and color change yarn and fun fun fun) and the Raw Honey Mitts (because gift knitting) and the 2016 Geek-A-Long blanket (because it’s 2018 and I’m still working on a project named after 2016).

The Chroma scarf has no new pictures because I could spam you with the pretty but since I took one last week there hasn’t been *that* much change since your last picture.

The Raw Honey Mitts have no new picture because I realized that I made a mistake on the first mitt and started the thumb gusset way too early, and now I have to decide what I’m going to do.

That leaves us with the Geek-A-Long blanket.

KNIT / TINK GAL Square

This is the “Periodic Table” square from the 2014 blanket. As the square was written, the back side would be a mirror image of this side. (AKA mirror writing, with the letters not readable from the back.)

Well. I couldn’t have that. Instead, I tweaked the charts a bit and made this one Extreme Double Knitting, and ended up with this for the back side of the square:

KNIT / TINK GAL Square

I’m quite pleased with how it turned out.

WIP Wednesday for 21 February 2018

Work was closed on Monday, which should have given me lots of time to prepare for this WIP Wednesday, but in reality all it did was throw off my sense of what day it is, and so this is being written rather late. Still, I can show you progress pictures!

First up is the one I’m currently mad at: the Thor Geek-A-Long square:

WIP Weds 2/21/18

I think you can see why I’m mad at it. I ran out of one of the yarns with only a few (well, 10-ish) rows left to go. I was hoping to be able to get 2 squares out of each ball of yarn (I already used this gray yarn for the Monty Python square), but that doesn’t look likely. I do have another ball of that yarn, because I am using lighter colors for the background squares and so was planning on multiple squares with that background. But now it looks like I’ll have 3 squares out of the 2 balls of yarn I bought, instead of the 4 I was hoping for. This also means that the main colors (the blue, in this case) won’t last for 2 squares, either. I have to re-think my plan. I might be pulling in more of the multi-color squares from prior years than I had been planning on.

(Side note: I’m only mad because I ran out of yarn. Otherwise I love this project.)

Next is the Raw Honey Mitts:

WIP Weds 2/21/18

I’m not sure yet if these will be a birthday gift or a Christmas gift. Partly it will depend on when they are finished, and partly it will depend on how warm it is at the time of the birthday.

Next pic is the Periodic Table Geek-A-Long square, because it’s been a while since I showed it off:

WIP Weds 2/21/18

I love the reversible aspect of it. Yes, this makes it extreme double knitting instead of just DK, but I do enjoy the end result of XDK, and I don’t find it that much more difficult. I just have to pay closer attention.

And finally, the project that has been getting the most love, the Lacy Entrelac Chroma scarf:

WIP Weds 2/21/18

There’s something about color change yarn that makes it so easy for me to knit. Also I love knitting entrelac (and mitered squares and other things that use short rows) so between the two this scarf is knitting up FAST.

Happy Wednesday!

WIP Wednesday for Valentine’s Day 2018

I was supposed to have little knit hearts to show you today, but I haven’t started knitting any yet. Finding the right yarn and needle combination won’t really take me that long, but I’m procrastinating knitting them using that as my excuse, so… yeah.

What I am knitting is this, the “Thor” Geek-A-Long square:

Suzy is helping me as often as she can.

I’m also knitting the Lacy Entrelac Scarf:

It is my current travel knitting (I haven’t moved my sock or mitt projects back to the “travel knitting” role since I’m so enamored of this scarf) and so it’s been getting worked on over my lunch breaks.

There are other WIPs on the needles, but these are the two I actively knit on this past week. I spent time doing stuff (that wasn’t knitting) with my family this past weekend, so there wasn’t as much knitting time last week as usual.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

WIP – I mean FO – Wednesday for 31 January 2018

I’m not showing you any knitting WIPs today, sorry. Instead I’m going to show off my two most recent FOs!

You’ve already seen teasers of it, but here’s the completed Trinity Shawlette.

I really love the way this turned out, and I think the yarn plays well with the pattern. Neither overpowers the other. (I am sad, though, that I haven’t been getting home early enough to get daylight pictures of the shawl. Oh well.)

I have also finished the first of the 2018 Geek-A-Long squares: Monty Python! Featuring That Rabbit!

So much fun. I’ve cast on my next square for this blanket (and spoiler alert, it’s from the 2017 squares) but I really enjoyed knitting this one. I’m hoping that I’ll continue enjoying the squares all the way until the blanket is done. I’ve been knitting GAL squares semi-consistently since 2016, and haven’t gotten sick of them yet, so I have hope.

Happy Wednesday! Hard to believe that tomorrow is February already…
