WIP Wednesday ~ in which it’s all about that GAL*

Okay, it hasn’t been all Geek-A-Long knitting this week. There has also been Reyna, and the Vanilla is the New Black socks. But all I’m going to talk about this week is the Geek-A-Long blanket.

2016 GAL Blanket Progress

The 2016 GAL blanket (per the official GAL rules) is technically 24 squares. I have knit 21 squares, and am on my 22nd. That means I’m about 88% done with the official blanket. However, since my blanket is knit with smaller yarn, it will be a smaller blanket than the official one. Also, since the official 2016 GAL is over, it doesn’t matter if I make my blanket to the official size.

Another thing I have to consider is that I am including more than just video game squares in my 2016 GAL blanket. (The 2016 theme was video games, for anyone who isn’t aware.) And as such, I have all of the 2017 squares (superheroes) and the 2014 squares (general geeky themes) to choose from. I could even use the 2015 squares if I can find some that are easy to adjust in size. (The 2015 squares were a different size.) And if I wait too long, I’ll likely have 2018 squares as well. So, that leaves me with a bunch of options and I’m not likely to want to leave any favorites out. I currently have at least 15 squares on my radar as possible inclusions to this blanket.

2016 GAL Blanket Progress

But… I would like to eventually finish it, and not leave this as a perpetual, never-ending project. In fact, finishing the GAL blanket is one of my goals for the 101 in 1001 Challenge I’m in the middle of, so I’ve set myself a goal of finishing it by 4/8/2019. That means I have to start looking at how big I truly want this to be, so that I can determine whether or not I’m on track for finishing it by spring of 2019.

I know for sure that I want to add at least one more row and one more column. That would be a total of 30 squares, meaning I’d have 8 3/4 squares left to knit. I’m not sure that’s enough. I am thinking that this will be a sofa lap blanket, so maybe one more column and two more rows? Meaning 35 squares total, or 13 3/4 more. I think that might be a good size. I will also eventually have to decide on orientation – aka is the top of the blanket the shorter side or the longer side? – but that is a decision which can wait for later.

2016 GAL Blanket Progress

*Yes, this did make me think of the song “All About That Bass”. However, not the original version. I didn’t think much of the song one way or the other until I heard the Postmodern Jukebox version, which I love. If you haven’t seen that one yet, you can find one take of it here (they have different casts, so sometimes songs get repeated), and it is awesome.

WIP Weds ~ in which there’s another FO, too

Knitting has been happening! You saw some proof of it on Monday, with the FO post for the 22 Leaves Shawl. Well, here’s another FO as proof of knitting:

Finished Caffeine Molecule GAL square

This, of course, is the caffeine molecule square for the Geek-A-Long blanket. (It’s a 2014 square, which knit in 2017, and which I’m including on my 2016 blanket. Yes. It’s complicated.)

Finished Caffeine Molecule GAL square

I love both sides. I’m not sure which one I like better.

And of course, when you cast off one GAL square, you cast on another.

Star Wars GAL Square

That is the Star Wars square (also from 2014), and I’m using the black yarn that is one of the colors for all my 2016 GAL Blanket squares along with SPARKLY WHITE YARN. Because sparkles.

There has been knitting on other things as well. I’m in the middle of the heel turn for the second Vanilla is the New Black sock, and I’m excited to see this pair finished and added to the gift box.

And while I haven’t made any noticeable progress on the Hyrule socks, I have discovered that I don’t have another US 2.5 (3mm) needle option for socks. (I thought I did. It was US 2 (2.75mm).) So, since I like this pattern and want to make another pair (though perhaps with a variation of making it a taller sock), I purchased a ChiaoGoo lace US 2.5 needle that I can magic loop. That way I can knit on both of the socks together and use up every last bit of yarn. Also, IT’S A LACE NEEDLE. AKA the tips are pointy. (No current picture of the Hyrule socks, though.)

Happy Wednesday!

WIP Weds ~ in which I spread the love

There has been knitting – lots of knitting! (Well, lots relative to what there has been recently.) And I’ve been knitting on lots of different things, too, which isn’t something I’ve done in a while.

I’ve been knitting on the 22 Leaves Shawl:

… and I’ve been working on the Hyrule Socks:

Both of those are all but done. I’m looking forward to casting them both off! They’ve been fun to knit, but it’s always a nice feeling to have a project finished.

In addition to those, I’ve been working on the Vanilla Is The New Black socks again:

Once the Hyrule Socks started needing more attention, the VITNB socks became the car knitting, and being completely vanilla socks at this point means I can make a lot of good progress in a comparatively short time. All three of the projects listed are going to be gifts, so I think I have a good handle on my gift knitting this year.

But it would be sad to do all that knitting and not work on anything for myself, right? So instead, I also picked up the current GAL square again, too. It’s been too long since I worked on that, but it’s always fun to get back to it. Geeky knitting, yay!

Still on the caffeine molecule square. Maybe I need more of said caffeine in order to knit faster and finish the square! On the other hand, if my double knitting was fueled entirely by caffeine, I might end up doing more frogging than knitting… I don’t know that I really want to risk that.

(As a reminder… this is officially my 2016 GAL blanket even though it’s long past 2016. I didn’t get it finished in time, but it’s focused mostly on the squares which were released in 2016.)

This is one of the benefits of a work holiday, though. Lots of time for knitting! Yay!

I hope you’re having a great week, and have a very happy June! Next time the 22 Leaves Shawl and Hyrule Socks are featured on the blog will hopefully be their glamour shots once they’re finished. Catch you next time!

WIP Wednesday ~ in which the GAL gets some love again

I’ve still been working on my Hyrule sock. It’s still fun. I’ve just about finished sock one – I’m down to just the cuff, and since this is an ankle sock there isn’t much of that. Now I get to hope that I still have enough yarn left for sock #2. Time to weigh the yarn! I think I’m not going to cast off, though. I’ll just put these live stitches on a holder and knit the second sock from the other end of the ball of yarn. That way I can use as much yarn as possible without – hopefully – having to rip out a bind-off. (I hate ripping out bind-offs.)

I have also picked the GAL squares back up! This one is the caffeine molecule from the original (2014) Geek-A-Long blanket. It’s getting to live in my 2016 GAL blanket (which was not finished in 2016, but that’s okay.)

I’m really enjoying this knit still, but since it’s not gift knitting it hasn’t been on my radar lately. However, Christmas is still quite a ways away, and even though I want to get my gift knitting done EARLY this year, that doesn’t mean I can’t also knit things for me.

I hope you’re having a great week so far!

(To enter the journal stuff giveaway, any comment will do. Tell me about your craft projects, vent about your week so far, or just say hi! Also, did you notice? I put up a picture of the stuff in the giveaway late Monday night.)

WIP Weds ~ in which there is knitting again

Okay, so there is knitting again this week! Maybe not as much as I would like (there has also still been lots of Stardew Valley playing time) but there is certainly more knitting than there was.

Let’s start with the current Geek-A-Long square, the caffeine molecule:

Knitting WIPs ~ 1/25/17

I’m enjoying this one a lot, but it is also the one that is the most impacted by my gaming time. I tend to knit the GAL squares at home while Mr. Wyrm and I watch TV. So when our TV time turns into Stardew Valley time, I’m not knitting. In any case, there has been progress on it since you last saw an update.

The next project has been getting a bit more knitting time, since it is one of my at-work-during-breaks knitting projects. It’s the Hedera Socks:

Knitting WIPs ~ 1/25/17

As you can see, I have finished the heel turn and done most of the gusset decreases. This is still sock one, though, so I’ll have to make another one to match when this one’s done in order to have a wearable pair. Still, I like the pattern well enough that I can manage that. It just might take a while, because…

I’ve also been working on the Dangling Conversation scarf (or is it a shawlette or a wrap?) during work breaks:

Knitting WIPs ~ 1/25/17

I love this scarf: it’s a simple knit, yet the YOs and the beads make it interesting enough to keep going. The shaping is also quite interesting, and I look forward to blocking it and seeing what it wants to do. The reason I have started working on this more at work, even though the increasing row length means I don’t feel like I get as much progress made on it as I used to, is because I have decided it needs to be done in time to be a Christmas present.

Yes, I am doing Christmas knitting again this year. And yes, I am starting now. (Otherwise I will get distracted and not finish, or will finish only in a panic on Christmas Eve night.) Here’s the latest Christmas knit I’ve started:

Knitting WIPs ~ 1/25/17

That’s the Cats Will Play shawl, and I started it last night, so there’s not much to see yet. However, I’m knitting it with Blue Moon yarn, and have loved the previous version of this shawl that I made, so I’m looking forward to working on this one.

Hope you’re having a great day!

WIP Wednesday ~ Geekalong and Sock knitting

First of all, I am still considering this the 2016 Geek-A-Long blanket. I started it in 2016 with the 2016 squares and rules. I didn’t finish it in 2016, but that’s still officially which blanket this is. It doesn’t matter that I’ve already included some 2014 squares, or that I will be including some 2017 squares. If I can figure out a way to make the size difference work, I will be including some 2015 squares also. Because I like them all.

Anyway, here are two finished squares that I haven’t shown you yet. Mortal Kombat:

and The Legend of Zelda (Majora’s Mask).

Also my start on the very first GAL square ever, the Caffeine Molecule:

It will be knit with the same yarn combo as Majora’s Mask, because that’s what I already had out and I was feeling lazy. Plus, I had always planned to knit the caffeine molecule in a variegated yarn, so this still fits my grand plan. (Not that I really have a grand plan.)

I have also been working a little on the Babette Blanket (still want to get that finished this year!) though I have no new pictures of it. And my travel knitting has been the Hedera Socks. Since I’ve been working on that over my lunch breaks all year (hehe, I love being able to say that! One of my favorite things about New Year’s) I have gotten some decent progress on the socks. Here’s a slightly old photo of the first sock, taken just as I finished the heel flap and was going to start the heel turn.

Hedera progress 1/3/17

I have since finished the heel turn and started the gusset decreases. But again, I haven’t taken any newer pictures than this one.

I hope you’re having a great week, and get some good progress on your hobbies this year, whatever those may be!

WIP Weds ~ the holiday for me edition

Happy holiday week! There are a lot of holidays all at once this year. (Sometimes they’re farther apart… and these are just the three I am most familiar with. I’m sure there are others I’m not aware of.) Yule starts today — on the Winter Solstice,  12/21. I have known this for a while, but I wasn’t aware that it was a multi-day celebration. (Which it is at least according to my Google search.) Then, Hanukkah starts on 12/24 this year, which is also Christmas Eve. I think this is the first time since I’ve been paying attention to the dates that the beginning of Hanukkah and Christmas have been on the same day! Very fun.

Anyway, happy holiday week! This year, I have NO holiday knitting to show you. I didn’t do any holiday knitting this year, so all the knitting is for me! (Well, mostly. But the one thing I’m currently knitting which I’ll be gifting isn’t going to be gifted until next year. So it’s not holiday knitting.)

Here’s what I’ve been up to:

1. The Dangling Conversation scarf.

It’s been a lot of fun. Lots of beading, since I elected to add a bead at the start of every row. But still a fun knit!

2. The Mortal Kombat GAL square.

I had paused on the GAL knitting for a little while, but I’ve picked it back up and am loving it again. (I think this is partly because I am so excited about the 2017 GAL blanket. Someone save me from myself.) I don’t have high hopes for finishing the 2016 GAL blanket in time to submit it for prizes – I still have 5 squares to knit – but I’ve decided that I want to have at least the official 2016 GAL blanket finished before I start any 2017 GAL knitting.

I am planning on making the current GAL blanket bigger than my official 2016 one. This is because I want to go back and knit some non-video-game themed 2014 squares as well. But that might happen later on, and not right away. I’ll have to see.

3. The Leaving Cowl.

Leaving Cowl - 75% done

This is the one that I am knitting for a 2017 gift. I’m close to done with it, which is nice, but I also feel no pressure to get it finished before Christmas. And that is nicer. I’ve been loving knitting it in the Cascade 220 sport yarn that I had originally bought for the 2015 GAL blanket. (Hmm, I wasn’t so sure about knitting the GAL blanket in sport-weight. Maybe I’ll have to re-think my participation in 2017.  We’ll see… I do love the GAL knitting community. AND THE YARN for the 2017 blanket. So yummy looking.)

Anyway, that’s my current knitting progress. I’m enjoying it and the lack of “get it done before Christmas!” stress.

I hope your week is stress-free and holiday-full!
