Top Ten Tuesday ~ Page to Screen Freebie

It’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday! Don’t forget to head over to That Artsy Reader Girl and join the linkup!

(Books that became movies / TV shows, movies that became books, great adaptations, bad ones, books you need to read before watching their movie / TV show, movies you loved based on books you hated or vice versa, books you want to read because you saw the movie or vice versa, etc.)

There are so many ways this prompt could go… I could probably do each of the suggested ideas as its own list of ten. I’m not, however. I’m going to list books where I saw the movie or TV adaptation first, and then read (or wanted to read) the book because of that. I will make a note if I’ve read the book, but otherwise it’s still on my TBR.

    1. 11/22/63 by Stephen King
    2. The Princess Bride by William Goldman (read in 2008 but I want to re-read)
    3. Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein
    4. 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clark (read in 2009)
    5. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen (read in 2016)
    6. Emma by Jane Austen (read in 2018)
    7. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
    8. The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy (read in 2010)
    9. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton (read in 2010)
    10. Somewhere in Time by Richard Matheson

I’m sure there are others as well, but these are the first ten that I thought of where I know I saw the adaptation first, and wanted to read the book second.

  1. Yay to Jurassic Park!! One of my favorite books/adaptations ever.

    Also- there’s a movie/show on 11/22/63?! I didn’t know that!

  2. I really fancy reading Jurassic Park actually. But, usually, once I’ve seen a film, I can’t be bothered with the book, so I have to make sure I read it first.

  3. Which adaptations of Sense and Sensibility and Emma did you watch?

I want to read Jurassic Park and The Lost World soon-ish and I want to read Crazy Rich Asians before I watch the movie, but I’m not sure when that will happen.

Awesome list idea! I try to read the book first, but there are definitely films I’ve seen before reading.

    1. I’ve seen the Emma Thompson Sense and Sensibility (so many times… love that movie), and the Gwyneth Paltrow Emma (once). I haven’t seen any of the other Austen films or series, but I know that there are strong opinions on which ones are better than others.

From what I’ve heard, Crazy Rich Asians the book is less rom-com than the movie, though I haven’t read it yet so I can’t comment from personal experience. Still, the movie was fun by itself.

      1. Those are good versions. I love the BBC series for Emma and Sense and Sensibility as well, for different reasons. Each version (at least for these two adaptations) have their own strengths and weaknesses.

I’m glad to hear it was fun. I’ll have to decide if I want to read the book or just cave and watch the film.
