Friday Reads ~ The Good, The Bad, And The Witchy

The Good, The Bad, And The Witchy: Wishcraft Mystery #3
by Heather Blake
(mystery, slight paranormal)

This is the third book in the Wishcraft Mystery series, and I hope there are many more to come. Like the other books in the series, this is a fun fluff read, a good cozy mystery for lazy summer days. There is a little bit of magic involved in the plot, though not a whole lot – especially compared to the first book in the series. However, there is magic of another kind: storytelling magic. TGTB&TW may be a light read, but it is well crafted.

Though the main characters in this story are all magical types, they behave like normal people. (Well, normal eccentric people.) I found myself noticing personality quirks that I’ve seen on friends or acquaintances of mine. And while having an entire village of almost quirky people isn’t something that’s part of my life, it’s completely believable in the world Heather Blake has created.

The plot is a relatively standard “someone is murdered and the main character needs to figure out who” – with a twist. The MC needs to figure out who the murderer is because the murdered guy’s spirit will essentially haunt her until his murder is solved. One aspect of this book that I liked is that the MC got her hand slapped for meddling in police affairs. All too often cozy mysteries allow the MCs to much about in investigations even though they have no knowledge or jurisdiction to do so. It was nice to have her reminded of that fact (even if it didn’t stop her from investigating).
