WiP Strategy

So, I promised a book giveaway contest for today. Keep reading to get to it. (Not a knitter? Too bad. Put up with the knitting content anyway. ;) )

I really like finishing knit projects. (Well, all projects, but Weds are for knitting.) The problem is, many of the projects I like working on take a LOT of time, so I don’t get to finish them as often as I’d like. I’m so close to finishing this next one that I can taste it… but it’s. Not. Done. Yet.

Damson BO

I had to stop DURING THE BIND OFF, for goodness’ sake. Partly because the rows are so long by this point, that it takes at least 15 minutes to work a single row.

However, I did want to show you the difference between this Damson and the previous one. (It would be easier to see the difference with a better camera/lighting. I will make sure to show this better when the second shawl is finished and blocked.)

Damson Comparison

In the first one (purple), I knit the lace section with a different decrease (I did sl1, k2tog, psso where the pattern calls for sl2, k1, pass 2 sts over). In the second (blue), I knit the decreases called for. However, the first one has the entire lace section in stockinette, as per the pattern. As I was knitting it, I decided I wanted to knit the lace in half garter stitch, so that there was no line shouting “NEW CHART STARTS HERE!!!” I think it worked quite well. Blocking will tell for sure.

And now for the contest.

Damson & Give-away

Want to win that book? EXIT STRATEGY by Kelley Armstrong; first in the Nadia Stafford books (thriller style, no paranormal for once) (My review… which says, in a nutshell, that this is a very good book of Kelley’s for fans of contemporary thrillers.)

All you have to do is comment on a post between now and midnight (Pacific time) on Monday, 2/15. Any post dated between today and Monday (inclusive). If you comment on ALL the posts, you get more chances to win. (That’s 4 days worth of comments. 4 chances to win.) Multiple comments on each post only count as one entry, though. (If you want to comment without entering in the contest, just say so.)

(And yes, this is a thinly disguised plea for more comments on the blog.)

Sound simple? It does to me. I’ll put everyone’s name in a spreadsheet in order of earliest comment on first post (this one) to last comment on Monday’s post, and draw a random number. (So they won’t be strictly chronological. Just approximately so.) On Tuesday, along with a book review, I’ll announce the winner.

If I get enough entries, I will also draw a second name, and the first winner will get his or her choice of EXIT STRATEGY and something else (quite likely GRACE HAMMER by Sara Stockbridge, though this is not definite).

Oh. And because someone may ask – yes, the pillowcase the pictures were taken on have a decorative border. It’s hedgehogs.

  1. No need to include me in the contest!

The garter stitch is a nice touch, but what I’m really loving is that orange hedgehog. :)

  2. No need to enter me because I already have the book. But love the hedgehogs. :)

And – drum roll – I am finishing my first crochet project of the year. It’s a blanket which I guess is easy, but I am totally appreciating the WOW of finishing something.

After the blanket I’m going to have my first bash at knitting socks!

  4. Also have the book, but loving the shawls :D Can’t wait until I get good enough to attempt something like that!

  5. Please enter me into the contest. Thanks.

  8. I like sl1, k2tog, psso – just as I like sl1, k1, psso — if I try ssk, I lose a stitch. Sometimes I do kt tog ttb, and that works, too. (My Welsh knitter friend says she’s always done it that way!)

Both shawls are beautiful, of course.
