NaNo Update: Day 8

November 8, 2008

Well, I had intended to post NaNo updates daily, but I didn’t get to it yesterday (visiting family) or Thursday (next-to no words written). So here is today’s instead, though I’d gotten away from weekend posts.

NaNo Day 8 (Update as of 2:30 PST… hopefully still lots of time to get more done.) (More than doubled what I’d done earlier, so I’m happy!)

Daily WC: 1017 2,235
Total WC: 9456 10,674
TOTAL WC GOAL: 13,336

Snippet:

“I am sorry, professeur, I do not know.”

“Because you are too busy dreaming about a boy, no?”

“No!” My ears burned, even though I hadn’t been thinking about a boy until he’d said something. Of course, as soon as he’d made the suggestion, my mind flashed back to the image of Jay and Teresa in the hall, leaning close together… “I’m just… tired.”

Oh, and I remembered something today. This is a FIRST DRAFT. It’s allowed to be filled with things like “insert name here” and “figure out transition” and “this isn’t working but it’s a placeholder.”

Though, I must admit, I much prefer Lilith Saintcrow’s thought of calling it a Zero Draft instead of a First Draft. And much though I share her love of “Romancing the Stone,” I must remember that no one – outside of fiction – ever types in a perfect draft on a typewriter, finishes it with a tear-filled flourish, and presents it to her “editor” (hah – try publisher, silly Hollywood) who then confirms its perfection. Makes a good movie opener, but add a few more curses and revisions and throwing-of-the-typewriter-across-the-room to make it more realistic. (In that, I prefer “Jewel of the Nile”… she *does* throw that typewriter. Highly amusing.)

Anyway. By writing all of this I am procrastinating. Going to stop now, and get back to NaNo.

(10:45pm update: I am heading to bed now, and stopping at my first ever 2K+ day this NaNo. Tomorrow should be a better day, even, since I’ve now gotten past the scene that was giving me issues. It will give me more issues during revision, but that’s another day. Now I get to play with a sleepover and Tarot readings.)

  1. I was thinking of you when I read the Zero Draft post! It made a lot of sense to me. :)
