So I promised Chris yesterday that I would write a post with some of my favorite books today. I later realized that I should have told her I’d do the post on Thursday, when I could make it a TT. Ah well. Today it is. And since this is Banned Books Week, we’ll just do another book post on Thursday.

The Lord of the Rings used to be a favorite book. But then they made it a movie, and now I’m not sure I’ll ever read the book again. I really love the way they did the movies, so I have no current desire to read the books. (Yes I have quibbles, but overall I am pleased with the movies.)

Other books that are still favorites…

The Otherworld Series by Kelley Armstrong

I have mentioned this book series before, and I will mention it again. I love these books.

The next one is coming out soon! Yay! And I get to beta the second book in the related YA series – double yay! Anyway. Awesome series.

Holly Lisle’s Romantic Suspense books

Midnight Rain, Last Girl Dancing, I See You, and Night Echoes. I love these books. I wish she had written more of them. (I guess maybe she still will.) They are not her usual fantasy fare, but they are so well written! The characters are realistic, the plots have twists you see coming and more that you don’t. Love them.

The Smoke Series by Tanya Huff

Another series I wish conitued. Sadly, I guess sales weren’t high enough to keep the publisher asking for more.

Though, I do also enjoy her Keeper series. Magic and cats and a hot guy – who could want more?

That’s going to have to do it for today, if I ever want to actually post this. I might make Best Books an ongoing thing, though, a way to pimp out books I love even when they’re not newly-read ones. We’ll have to see.

Happy reading!

NaNo BadgeSo, Wednesday starts the last quarter of the year. 3 months in which I said in my goals post that I would get CP finished. And I kinda decided to write a different story for NaNoWriMo…

I think I must be crazy. But it means I will (hopefully) get a lot written int he next three months. And it means a lot of LOLcats posts while I’m frantically writing, so as to keep the blog from collecting dust.

I will still be posting WIP pictures and such. And I will be writing other blog posts. If all goes well, all of my writing (blogs included) will be catapulted into high gear, and I’ll get tons done. Let’s hope for that, shall we?

Promised Contest

EDIT: I had this all set to post Friday, but something went wonky. So it’s a day late, but here it is anyway! I had wondered why there were no comments on a contest post yet…

Well. I promised you a contest today! So, here it is:

Remember when there was a SHOMI book contest at Book Binge? And I won?

The books arrived this week:

SHOMI Books 1

And I’m really looking forward to reading them. Yay! New books! I’m very excited. (They are, in case you don’t have X-ray vision and can’t see through the books on top to read the titles of the books on bottom, TIME TRANSIT by Kay Austin, NETHERWOOD by Michele Lang, COUNTDOWN by Michelle Maddox, WIRED by Liz Maverick, TWIST by Colby Hodge, HIDDEN by Eve Kenin, and MOONGAZER by Marianne Mancusi.) (Oh, and no, they didn’t send the bag. I just wanted the color for a backdrop.)

So that’s really cool. But I already own two of them. So, what’s a girl to do?

You got it – hold a contest to “get rid of” the two duplicated books!

SHOMI Books 2

Wired and Moongazer are yours for the winning! (The links are to my reviews.)

What do you have to do to enter the contest? Leave a comment here, saying these things:

  • that you would like to enter
  • if you have a preference for either book
  • what (if anything) you plan to do for Halloween

If you choose not to comment on Halloween but ask to enter the contest, I will still enter you. But I will pout. (You will not be able to see it. But you will know I’m pouting anyway.)

I will run this contest for … let’s say 2 weeks. So, next Friday (Oct 3) I will pick one winner. And the week after that (Oct 10) I will pick a second one. Which book which week? Well, that depends on the preference of the first winner!

Good luck and happy commenting, all!

(Contest open to everyone, everywhere on Earth. I won’t ship to the moon, though, sorry.)

(The winners of the two books will be different people. So if you win the first week, you will not be entered the second week.)

Thursday Thirteen: 13 G&S Favorites

G&S = Gilbert & Sullivan. Though if you don’t know that already, this entire post will likely make no sense to you.

And a reminder, this is only favorites from Gilbert and Sullivan options. I am not counting ALL operas/light operas/musicals out there, because that would take too long to decide.

~*~

  1. Favorite Show: Iolanthe
  2. Favorite Music: Iolanthe
  3. Favorite Song: “I Have a Song to Sing, Oh” from Yeoman of the Guard
  4. Favorite Overture: from the Mikado
  5. Favorite Character: hard to pick… but I think Nanki-Poo from the Mikado, because he’s a bard (kinda)
  6. Favorite Madrigal: “Brightly Dawns Our Wedding Day” from the Mikado
  7. Favorite Villain: Katisha from the Mikado – who isn’t really a villain, but still (just realized there aren’t that many true villain’s in these stories… mostly just misunderstandings)
  8. Favorite Entrance: the peers’ entrance in Iolanthe
  9. Favorite Performance: when I saw The Pirates of Penzance at Stratford, Canada… the Pirate King made his entrance by swinging out on a rope over the audience
  10. Favorite Special Effects: Ruddigore – ghosts! Fun! Though, The Sorcerer is a very close second.
  11. Favorite Costumes: Princess Ida . . . at least when I saw it. I don’t know if it’s traditional, but I saw it with medieval costumes, and they were awesome
  12. Favorite Patter Song: “Love, unrequited, robs me of my rest” from Iolanthe (awesome song!)
  13. Favorite Ending: from Yeoman of the Guard, because it’s different than their usual formula

A Stole and a Haircut…

cost a touch more than two bits, though.

So – we have a picture post for you today! First, the WIP pictures I promised:

MS4 9-23-08 1

This is my current progress on my Mystery Stole 4. I’ve fallen rather behind in the clues. I’m only about 1/2-way through clue 2, and haven’t started on clue 3. (Not to mention clue 4, which is released on Friday.)

MS4 9-23-08 2

Maybe I’ll catch up, maybe I won’t. (I tend to think “won’t” is more likely.) But I am loving the pattern, and working with this yarn – elann Baby Lace Merino – is wonderful. Plus, I love beading lace. It’s so pretty!

MS4 9-23-08 3

I also have pictures of my haircut… Before and after!

Haircut Mosaic

I really love it. Though, it does take a bit more maintenance than just long and straight…

(Oh dear. I just realized how long it’s been since I managed to get a picture of Suzy-cat for the blog. I must see about getting one of her for next week…)

Quick Political Nod

I don’t normally talk politics. I think it’s too inflaming to discuss on a blog I want dedicated to my crafts – writing and knitting and stitching and all the rest.

But.

I thought this blog post about how not everyone in Alaska is a shiny happy Palin lover was an eye-opener. I’m not going further into my own personal political preferences at the moment. But. I still think that perspective is a good thing, and that it is nice to hear from the real people now and again, and not just the media’s version of events.

Too Tired To Title

So… I’m not coming up with a title. It is Tuesday, though, and I have two good books to present to you.

In order of when I finished them… first is WAR AND XPs by Rich Burlew. This is the 3rd (kinda… kinda 5th) Order of the Stick book. (5th written, but 2 were prequels, so this is called book 3.) It is a comic book, and if you are a games (of the D&D variety, chiefly) you need to read these. Don’t want to buy a book? That’s okay. They’re posted free online here. (Why buy it if they’re avaiable free? Well, the book form is nicer to own. Plus, there are extra bonus strips, and prefaces, and insight into why the author did some things the way he did. And you get the satisfaction of knowing you helped support good humor.)

Anyway, as the 3rd in a series that will appeal to a limited audience anyway, I’ll just say they’re good fun. I really like them.

And the second book I have for you today is WORKING FOR THE DEVIL by Lilith Saintcrow. This is book 1 of the Dante Valentine series (5 total) and I really liked it. My only complaint was that there were too many loose ends in the relationship part of the book. However, as this is an urban fantasy and not a paranormal romance, I guess that’s to be expected. There will be issues with the relationship all the way through the 5 book series. (Which annoys me. I want them to be happy and working together nicely, not all on edge with each other. I do understand why it was done, but… I like romance in my fantasy. Even when it’s not a romance.) I did really enjoy the book, though. I put off way too many things I should have been doing this evening so I could finish it. Nicely written.

So… I goofed and didn’t have a Monday post because I just didn’t make the time. Later this week I should have several fun things:

  • Work-in Progress pictures
  • Haircut pictures
  • another contest!
  • … and hopefully some better titles

Stay tuned for details…

It’s Talk Like A Pirate Day! Yar! That sounds like an excuse to be silly, to me.

So… Randomness.

cat

I have a window now. The way my desk is set up, the joke is that I have the biggest office in the company. (It’s almost a staircase landing, but nicer.)

I’m getting my haircut tomorrow. If I can get a picture I like of it, I’ll do before and after shots.

I like Halloween a lot more now than I did as a kid. It was intimidating then. Now, it’s just a fun excuse to dress up. And decorate. And all that jazz. I still don’t care much for Haunted Houses, though.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Thursday Thirteen: 13 Procrastination Tools

I’ve been procrastinating lately. So why not share the ways?

~*~

  1. Plurk. It’s amusing, similar to Twitter but with dancing bananas.
  2. LOLCats. ‘Nough said.
  3. Facebook. Another common time-waster for me.
  4. Books. There is always another one to read, and I do my fair share.
  5. Wiki. Look up one thing, and five hours later you don’t even remember why you started looking in the first place, but you now know more about statistical mechanics than you ever thought possible.
  6. To make it more interesting, check out the random Wiki article tool.
  7. Seventh Sanctum generators. Way too much of a time sink, especially for authors who can pretend it’s “doing research.”
  8. YouTube. Naturally. You’d be amazed (or maybe not) at the things you can find there.
  9. WordPress blogs. Mine and others.
  10. Movies. When in doubt, watch a movie you know and love. Like the Princess Bride. Or Enchanted. Or Stardust. (Can’t quote it? Then you haven’t seen it enough times.)
  11. D&D. This does require other people to play it with, so may be prohibitive when you’re procrastinating work and need to appear to be working. You can’t tell them you’re working if they know you’re not because you’re PLAYING WITH THEM. To combat this, find a computer game you can play instead. I recommend something mindless but addictive, like one of the Dash games or Zuma or JewelQuest.
  12. Blogthings. Want to know what color orange you are? Or what your music taste says about you? Go to Blogthings and find out all that and more! (I spend lots of time there. It’s sad, really.)
  13. Sleep. “I was just closing my eyes to concentrate better” is a great excuse.

Okay, it’s official. The job transfer is in process (from glorified receptionist to admin assistant) and life is currently crazy.

I need this guy to come help me out:
