Keep On Knittin’

October 26, 2006

I am still here, and still knitting. I am actually getting some good progress, and have the pictures to prove it.

But you will have to wait on the pictures. Sorry.

I also have a story of knitting resourcefulness. As you probably know, Halloween is fast approaching. And with it, the mad rush to finish costumes. Well, my sister wanted to make up a medieval-type fighter costume, complete with armor. Plate mail is out, as it’s too hard to make a costume version look good and the real stuff is too expensive and heavy. Leather armor is easier, but not quite enough. So, she wanted to have pieces of chain mail poking out from under her tunic to imply that she was wearing a full chain shirt underneath – without having the annoyance or encumbrance of actually wearing a chain shirt.

But chain mail takes a lot of time to make. (I know. I have made some. Beadwork magazine actually printed a pattern for a chain mail dice pouch in one of their editions, and I used that to learn how to make a version of chain mail. They actually reprinted the pattern in their “Best of Beadwork” volume that’s out now, if you’re curious.)

So, what to do? Well, on a trip through a craft store, she found some silver cord. And, when knit up, this cord looks like a passable version of costume chain mail. (It’s also probably a heck of a lot easier to sew onto the rest of the costume.)

Yay knitters! We can do anything!
